Accidental Heroes Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Coincidental Heroes - Essay Example They chose to defy the guidelines for an honorable reason and developed as saints. This paper will investigate a few motion pictures where saints are settled on by their conscious choices to damage the standards set up by the general public they live in, their administration or their bosses. These motion pictures are The Island, The Matrix, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, and Ironman 2. The topic about disregarding settled standards and rising as a saint toward the end is evidently regular as well as broadly acknowledged among the two producers and moviegoers. The Island The 2005 film The Island is an advanced film set in the year 2019 where an organization has culminated the study of human cloning. They at that point benefited from this innovation by selling over the top expensive medical coverage strategies to the well off individuals who need to live until the end of time. The customers were informed that the organization is keeping a load of cloned body part s which they will use for splendidly perfect organ transplants. The customers are unconscious that what the organization has at their office is a network of clones who are then slaughtered so as to gather the required human organs. The unintentional legend in the individual of Lincoln Six-Echo is one of the clones living in the exceptionally disconnected and intently observed office. They were not permitted to communicate with each other. They were made to accept that they were the last overcomers of humankind and they competed for a spot in â€Å"The Island† which is apparently the last boondocks of the earth. Everything they might do is being checked and there are rules for everything. On the off chance that snooping around can lead to unexpected trouble, Lincoln Six-Echo’s curious nature spared him and the others. He had a ton of inquiries regarding the things around him and about what they are advised to accept. What's more, he looked for answers. At the point when he asked his companions and the specialists at the office, he doesn't find straight solutions so he chose to face the challenge of abusing the facility’s rules and discover the appropriate responses himself. The film proceeded to uncover reality and portrays the experiences of Lincoln Six-Echo outside the office where he at long last discovered that the individuals in the office are â€Å"copies of individuals over here in the world† (The Island). On the off chance that he didn't face the challenge of disregarding the guidelines which was carefully and abusively actualized inside the office, Lincoln Six-Echo would not think about who and what he truly was. Also, he would not have the option to spare himself and his companion, Jordan Two-Delta, who had just won her pass to â€Å"The Island†. On the off chance that he didn't abuse the principles in his limited world, the protection company’s evil business would not be uncovered beyond any confining influen ce and its customers would stay unmindful of the way that somebody indistinguishable from them needed to pass on with the goal for them to live. The Matrix The lattice is by a wide margin the most intelligent and interesting film I have ever observed. As a matter of fact, I needed to watch it a subsequent time to tune in and completely retain the exchanges, and a third time to completely and totally appreciate what the film is about. Despite the fact that this film is stuffed with activity arrangements and amazing enhancements, one can just completely comprehend the genuine importance and message of the film by retaining each word in its restricted exchanges. The Matrix tells about a post-end of the world earth where people are constrained by machines. People lay sleeping in cases while their brains are inside a computer generated simulation program called the lattice. Inside the lattice, the psyches of resting bodies live â€Å"normal† lives where they work, eat, rest and ki ck the bucket. In any case, in reality, that is, outside of the lattice framework, individuals are oblivious in a honeycomb of units with tubes appended to their bodies and where â€Å"the machines melt the dead to take care of the living†

World Trade Organization Example

World Trade Organization Example World Trade Organization â€" Coursework Example > World Trade OrganizationThe world trade organization (WTO) is a trade liberalizing organization. Additionally, it is a governments’ forum for negotiating trade related agreements. It also controls a system of rules related to trade. WTO was born after negotiations among the members, and this became the method to be used in their proceedings. Nothing can be passed in the organization without deep negotiations (Palast, 2004, 14). WTO is helpful to many countries because it is a trade liberalizing union hence in case of a country faces trade barriers and wants them lowered, it has to contact the WTO for assistance. The WTO rules sometimes support maintaining the trade barriers in order to protect some happenings like the spread of diseases and consumer protection (Mullard, 2004, 29). WTO operates with guidance of WTO agreements that are negotiated and signed by the world’s trading countries. The agreements provide the rules and regulations that govern the countries within the gro und rules for the commerce internationally. These agreements are proposed to help producers, importers and exporters to do their business as well as allowing the government to meet its environmental and social goals and objectives (Rossi, 2007, 259). The purpose behind the dispute solving process employed by WTO is with neutral procedures that are based on legally agreed foundations. World trade organization began its operations on first January 1995. Its trading system is however, a half-century-older than its launch (Nunes, 2008, 94). WTO operates under certain rules and regulations that make its operations open and fair to all its members. WTO has principals that control the trading system. These principals are legal documents that cover a wide range of happenings and hence they are complex and lengthy. These principles provide the foundation of multilateral systems of the trade. This aids the organization in making decisions that are not biased in its problem solving. In addit ion, the organization uses the principles that have been made collectively without expecting any resistance from any member country. This makes the organization act in a manner of dictatorship (Cox, 2006, 16). It is evident that once a small number of citizens of a nation taste the fruits of their labors that are brought about by the free trade that is highly recommended by WTO, they tend to support the dictators and the people who suppress the freedom, to remain in power. This is so because they what to continue enjoying the fruits. When the global trade rules are designed, they mostly lie on the side of protecting corporations, not the people’s rights. Corrupt leaders have a high probability of remaining in power as they are strengthened by the trade’s agreements, which is a source of more money into the government (Nunes, 2008, 95). It is also everybody’s knowledge that the trades rules operate in high levels like super-national levels. This means that its rules can only deal with the whole country that affects all the other members. With this, the organization can be viewed as undemocratic because democracy is at its best when done at the lowest level possible (Chilov, 2009, 19). The other most discouraging thing is that WTO is not a democratic organization by its self. This is because it is highly dominated by most developed countries such as US, whose leaderships has been dominated by campaigns that are of particular interests to make money from corporations (Palast, 2004, 29). Thus, the formation of WTO rules is to some extent influenced by the corporations that have inside access during the rules negotiations. It was discovered that the strong nations such as US are believed to be making the most contributions in the rule-making process that are used in the governing of the organization. This is a clear indication that democracy does not exist in the organization (Mullard, 2004, 31).

The Reality Of The Television - 859 Words

That confusion made the audience take the broadcast seriously, and therefore caused mass hysteria. Multiple newspapers from the time reported of people rushing the streets and calling into their local police stations asking about the alien invasion. One firsthand account even states that a couple drove out to the tall timbers in Oregon, turned off the car and just sat there. They wanted their final moments to be together in silence. People actually believed it was happening. (American Experience, 2015) Welles had done it. He tapped into the American psyche, and scared people. In the interview after the broadcast, he denied everything. Dad couldn’t fathom why people would even think the broadcast was real, Welles daughter has said. Welles’s genius didn’t stop at that night in 1938. Intact, through that broadcast, Welles found himself in Hollywood signing a contract with a multiple film deal with RKO Pictures. ( Bogdanovich, 1992) Welles’s contract had one clause that is still rare in Hollywood today, the full creative control clause. Basically, what that means is that RKO guaranteed Welles full control over the films he chose to make, RKO had to release whatever Welles gave them. Welles used this opportunity to voice his opinion of a massive tycoon at the time, William Randolph Hearst. Hearst was a business man that owned the majority of the newspapers in the country. Any story that he didn’t want to be news, was not run. Welles hated this. Personal Narrative My Most Significant Experience

Narrative Writing By Mckenzee My most significant experience in my life is unforgettable. I was there with my sisters, my mom, and my dad. It was the most horrifying event that I have ever witnessed. Assuming that it was going to be an effortless task, I took my attention gradually away from the horses, and commenced a conversation with my sister. The Beginning Of Human Flight Essays - Aviation, Aeronautics

The Beginning Of Human Flight The Beginning of Human Flight The Wright Brothers were interested in flying since their childhood. Bishop Wright, their father, gave them a toy helicopter when they were young and ever since they have been interested in aviation. The Wright Brothers are famous for their invention of the airplane, or the flying machine as it was called then. The first flight of the plane occurred on December 17, 1903. This was just the turn of the century, yet the Wright Brothers invented something that would last forever. This was in fact the case. This flight would spark a race of technology that has taken us from into the air to flying into space. This also launched the aviation and the space age. The airplane is a major role in the world. The plane made traveling overseas easier and quicker. The plane was a useful tool in both of the World Wars. The airplane was a major part of the weapon and attacking strategy for all the countries with this technology. They say the Wright Brothers borrowed ideas of others in order to reach their goal. It doesnt matter because they accomplished their desire to fly. Today aircraft are truly monsters compared to the Wright Flyer. The invention of the plane changed the world as we know it. It erased miles and brought people closer together, and uniting and diversifying the world as we know it. It went from novel toy for the daring to a tool of destruction. It brings life saving food, medical supplies, and clothing to those in need. It can carry us to any point on the globe and bring us back. The Wright Brothers had a dream and the made it happen. No matter how many times they were told no it wouldnt work, they kept going and climbing to be the best and to fly. The research on the Wright Brothers was conducted mostly at Joyner Library. Also some of the information was obtained from the Internet. Joyner Library had most all the information on the Wright Brothers there is. Newspaper from the 1903 on microfilm were read to see the first hand accounts from that time. Books were read to get the second hand accounts. The picture from the Internet were very important on creating the exhibit. The exhibit was created by showing the things that evolved and the changes that occurred by the invention of the plane. A veteran of the American Revolution, the senior McDonough served with the rank of major at the Battle of Long Island and was later wounded at White Plains. Raised in a strict Episcopal family, the younger Thomas was educated locally and by 1799 was working as a store clerk in Middletown, DE. At this time, his elder brother James, a midshipman in the US Navy, returned home having lost a leg during the Quasi-War with France. This inspired MacDonough to seek a career at sea and he applied for a midshipmans warrant with the aid of Senator Henry Latimer. This was granted on February 5, 1800. Around this time, for unknown reasons, he changed the spelling of his last name from McDonough to MacDonough. Going to Sea Reporting aboard USS Ganges (24), MacDonough sailed for the Caribbean in May. Through the summer, Ganges, with Captain John Mullowny in command, captured three French merchant vessels. With the end of the conflict in September, MacDonough remained in the US Navy and moved to the frigate USS Constellation (38) on October 20, 1801. Sailing for the Mediterranean, Constellation served in Commodore Richard Dales squadron during the First Barbary War. First Barbary War While aboard, MacDonough received a thorough nautical education from Captain Alexander Murray. As the composition of the squadron evolved, he received orders to join USS Philadelphia (36) in 1803. Commanded by Captain William Bainbridge, the frigate succeeded in capturing the Moroccan warship Mirboka (24) on August 26. Taking shore leave that fall, MacDonough was not aboard Philadelphia when it grounded on an uncharted reef in Tripoli harbor and was captured on October 31. Without a ship, MacDonough was soon reassigned to the sloop USS Enterprise (12). Serving under Lieutenant Stephen Decatur, he aided in the capture of the Tripolitan ketch Mastico in December. This prize was soon refitted as USS Intrepid (4) and joined the squadron. Concerned that Philadelphia would be salvaged by the Tripolitans, the squadron commander, Commodore Edward Preble, began formulating a plan to eliminate the stricken frigate. This called for Decatur to sneak into Tripoli harbor using Intrepid, storming the ship, and setting it ablaze if it could not saved. Familiar with Philadelphias layout, MacDonough volunteered for the raid and played a key role. Moving forward, Decatur and his men succeeded in burning Philadelphia on February 16, 1804. A stunning success, the raid was termed the the most bold and daring act of the Age by British Vice Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson. Peacetime Promoted to acting lieutenant for his part in the raid, MacDonough soon joined the brig USS Syren (18). Returning the United States in 1806, he aided Captain Isaac Hull in overseeing the construction of gunboats at Middletown, CT. Later that year, his promotion to lieutenant was made permanent. Completing his assignment with Hull, MacDonough received his first command in the sloop of war USS Wasp (18). Initially operating in the waters around Britain, Wasp spent much 1808 off the United States enforcing the Embargo Act. Departing Wasp, MacDonough spent part of 1809 aboard USS Essex (36) before leaving the frigate to direct gunboat construction at Middletown. With the repeal of the Embargo Act in 1809, the US Navy reduced its forces. The following year, MacDonough requested leave and spent two years as the captain of a British merchant vessel sailing to India. The War of 1812 Begins Returning to active duty shortly before the beginning of the War of 1812 in June 1812, MacDonough initially received a posting to Constellation. Fitting out at Washington, DC, the frigate required several months of work before being ready for sea. Eager take part in the fighting, MacDonough soon requested a transfer and briefly commanded gunboats at Portland, ME before being ordered to take command of US naval forces on Lake Champlain that October. Arriving at Burlington, VT, his forces were limited to the sloops USS Growler (10) and USS Eagle (10). Though small, his command was sufficient to control the lake. This situation changed radically on June 2, 1813, when Lieutenant Sidney Smith lost both vessels near Ile aux Noix. Building a Fleet Promoted to master commandant on July 24, MacDonough began large a shipbuilding effort at Otter Creek, VT in an effort to regain the lake. This yard produced the corvette USS Saratoga (26), the sloop of war USS Eagle (20), the schooner USS Ticonderoga (14), and several gunboats by late spring 1814. This effort was matched by his British counterpart, Commander Daniel Pring, who commenced his own building program at Ile aux Noix. Moving south in mid-May, Pring attempted to attack the American shipyard but was driven off by MacDonoughs batteries. Completing his vessels, MacDonough shifted his squadron of fourteen warships across the lake to Plattsburgh, NY to await Prings next sortie south. Out-gunned by the Americans, Pring withdrew to await the completion of the frigate HMS Confiance (36). Showdown at Plattsburgh As Confiance neared completion, British forces led by Lieutenant General Sir George Prà ©vost began gathering with the intention of invading the United States via Lake Champlain. As Prà ©vosts men marched south, they would be supplied and protected by British naval forces now led by Captain George Downie. To oppose this effort, badly outnumbered American forces, commanded by Brigadier General Alexander Macomb, assumed a defensive position near Plattsburgh. They were supported by MacDonough who arrayed his fleet in Plattsburgh Bay. Advancing on August 31, Prà ©vosts men, which included a large number of the Duke of Wellingtons veterans, were hampered by a variety of delaying tactics used by the Americans. Arriving near Plattsburgh on September 6, their initial efforts were turned back by Macomb. Consulting with Downie, Prà ©vost intended to attack the American lines in force on September 10 in concert with a naval effort against MacDonough in the bay. MacDonoughs Plan Blocked by unfavorable winds, Downies ships were unable to advance on the desired date and were forced to delay a day. Mounting fewer long guns than Downie, MacDonough took a position in Plattsburgh Bay where he believed his heavier, but shorter range carronades would be most effective. Supported by ten small gunboats, he placed Eagle, Saratoga, Ticonderoga, and the sloop Preble (7) in a north-south line. In each case, two anchors were used along with spring lines to permit the vessels to turn while at anchor. After scouting the American position on the morning of September 11, Downie chose to move forward. The Fleets Engage Passing around Cumberland Head at 9:00 AM, Downies squadron consisted of Confiance, the brig HMS Linnet (16), the sloops HMS Chubb (10) and HMS Finch (11), and twelve gunboats.  As the Battle of Plattsburgh began, Downie initially sought to place Confiance across the head of the American line, but shifting winds prevented this and he instead assumed a position opposite Saratoga. As the two flagships commenced battering each other, Pring was able to cross in front of Eagle with Linnet while Chubb was quickly disabled and captured. Finch moved to take a position across the tail of MacDonoughs line but drifted south and grounded on Crab Island. MacDonoughs Victory While Confiances first broadsides did significant damage to Saratoga, the two ships continued to trade blows with Downie being killed when a cannon was driven into him. To the north, Pring opened fire on Eagle with the American vessel unable to turn to effectively counter. At the opposite end of the line, Preble was compelled to withdraw from the fight by Downies gunboats. These were finally halted by determined fire from Ticonderoga. Under heavy fire, Eagle severed its anchor lines and began to drift down the American line permitting Linnet to rake Saratoga. With most of his starboard guns out of action, MacDonough employed his spring lines to turn his flagship. Bringing his undamaged portside guns to bear, MacDonough opened fire on Confiance. The survivors aboard the British flagship sought to conduct a similar turn but became stuck with the frigates vulnerable stern presented to Saratoga. Incapable of further resistance, Confiance struck its colors. Pivoting Saratoga a second time, MacDonough brought its broadside to bear on Linnet. With his ship out-gunned and seeing that further resistance was futile, Pring elected to surrendered. Having gained the upper hand, the Americans proceeded to capture the entire British squadron. Aftermath MacDonoughs triumph matched that of Master Commandant Oliver H. Perry who had won a similar victory on Lake Erie the previous September. Ashore, Prà ©vosts initial efforts were delayed or turned back. Learning of Downies defeat, he elected to break off the battle as he felt any victory would be meaningless as American control of the lake would prevent him from being able to resupply his army. Though his commanders protested the decision, Prà ©vosts army began retreating north to Canada that night. For his efforts at Plattsburgh, MacDonough was hailed as hero and received a promotion to captain as well as a Congressional Gold Medal. In addition, both New York and Vermont presented him with generous grants of land. Later Career After remaining on the lake into 1815, MacDonough took command of the Portsmouth Navy Yard on July 1 where he relieved Hull. Returning to sea three years later, he joined the Mediterranean Squadron as captain of HMS Guerriere (44). During his time abroad, MacDonough contracted tuberculosis in April 1818. Due to health issues, he returned to the United States later that year where he began overseeing the construction of the ship of the line USS Ohio (74) at the New York Navy Yard. In this position for five years, MacDonough requested sea duty and received command of USS Constitution in 1824. Sailing for the Mediterranean, MacDonoughs tenure aboard the frigate proved brief as he was forced to relieve himself of command due to health issues on October 14, 1825. Sailing for home, he died off Gibraltar on November 10. MacDonoughs body was returned to the United States where it was buried in Middletown, CT next to his wife, Lucy Ann Shale MacDonough (m.1812).

Crime Prevention in Criminal Justice System Research Paper

Crime Prevention in Criminal Justice System - Research Paper Example There are a variety of methods that authorities use to deal with and prevent crime, the common one being incarceration of criminals in jails and other rehabilitation centers, which has not proved effective in Springfield. Therefore, to deal with crime on the long term, a risk-focused approach offers better results in that the method deals with possible factors that would lead to crime. Crime rates in Springfield, IL Springfield is one of the areas that lead in crime rates across US and has been ranked as the third most dangerous area in the entire country (Federal Bureau of Investigation, 2012). Springfield has a population of 206, 601 residents, one of the less populated metropolitan areas that have surpassed many areas in the level of reported crimes. In 2010, there were reported 855 violent crimes per 100,000 residents in Springfield IL, which made the metropolitan the third highest dangerous city in the US after Detroit and Memphis. Giuoffo noted that Springfield has an unemploym ent rate of less than the country’s average of 7% as of July 2011, implying that unlike other areas, economy in the city may not be blamed for the high crime rate as the city is above average compared to many other cities. The metropolitan has a young population, that 66% of all residents are 44 years old or younger, which has been perceived as a contributing factor to the high crime rate (Giuffo, 2011). In addition, the city has high usage of methamphetamine, a prevalent drug across the area. All the same, a law was passed in the last few years that made it difficult to buy the drugs, which according to FBI has considerably reduced the crime rates (FBI, 2012). In addition to drug use, Springfield has a much poorer neighborhood in the city’s suburbs that has been blamed for the high rate of crime in the metropolitan. Consequently, indications are that crime rates in Springfield have soared due to a young population, use of hard drugs and a poor neighborhood. Generally, Springfield, IL in 2011 had a total population of 210,802 residents with a crime rate of 711.6 per 100, 000 residents. The city had a lower murder rate at 4.3, with property crime rates, burglary and larceny theft recorded at 4,290.8, 1,118.1 and 3,034.1 per 100,000 residents respectively (FBI, 2012 Abilene in Texas has a population of 168,729 slightly less than Springfield with the rate of violent crimes recorded at 297.5 per 100,000 residents. Property crime in this area is highest at 3,029.7 per 100,000 residents with murder being the lowest at 3.0 per 100,000 residents (FBI, 2012). On the contrary, Alexandria, LA has a population of 155,330 residents with a crime rate of 662 per 100,000 residents. The highest crime in this area is property crimes at 4.050.7 and the lowest crime being murder at 5.0 per 100,000 residents. On the same note, Appleton in Wisconsin has a total population of 226,649 residents with the crime rate being 509.5 per 100,000 residents. The highest crime in the area is property crime at 4,271.3 with the lowest crime being murder at a relatively higher rate of 11.8 per 100,000 residents. Comparing this data to the national statistics, the national violent crime rate was at 386.3 per

LAB Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

LAB - Essay Example Also, in the earliest years of logging much of the work was done in the winter so that the logs could be moved on sleds. Per the previous question, there are two ways that logs were taken to the appropriate sawmills. The first it was by sled in winter or down the rivers. Although many Michigan men became wealthy in the logging industry the majority of the workers, like the lumberjacks made about $26 a month plus their room and board. This was not particularly much overall. Bare ground, abandon branches, and low lying stumps were all that was left behind after the loggers had left an area. The rivers no doubt suffered, they would have changed and been damaged from the constant use and devastation to the surrounding areas. These areas became had little protective groundcover and created immense fire hazards that often would threaten untouched woods and settled areas. So many people believed the propaganda being spread that the leads cleared by loggers was ideal for settlement and farming. For this reason many families spent all of the money they had on this land. However, the land was not fertile, the families could not pay their taxes, and the land became forfeit and given to the state. Ingham County was the first to be settled. The roads were little more than mud pits, uneven, and difficult to travel. Corduroy roads were roads made from logs, it most cases they were later replaced with planks roads, which were much smoother. The Michigan citizens in the 1960s and 1970s were concerned because the air quality was beginning to diminish, water pollution due to sewage and industrial waste. They began to take measures to improve and repair the damage being done to their home environment. The silo is a rounded tower-like building that is used for storing grains. Comparison of Hes Just Not That Into You and 17 Again

Comparison of Hes Just Not That Into You and 17 Again People are always looking forward to watch romantic comedy movie as a way to spend time together with their beloved ones. In fact, romantic comedy is a general phrase for comedies that basically deal with the foolishness and misunderstanding of either young or middle aged lovers, in a light-hearted and happily manner which commonly inhibits serious parody. A typical plot of a romantic comedy is that two main characters, usually a man and a woman, come across, part away due to conflicts or other obstacles, then finally reunite. There are many options of romantic comedy movies to choose. The two romantic comedy movies which I choose to compare and contrast are â€Å"Hes just not that into you† and â€Å"17 Again†. Even though both movies have the same genre, that is romantic comedy, but they are different in terms of settings, story lines, and moral value. First and foremost, the settings of these two movies are different. â€Å"Hes just not that into you† was set primarily in middle aged adult working environment at Baltimore, Maryland, USA where as â€Å"17 Again† was set in teenager high school kind of environment at Los Angeles, California, USA. The characters present in the â€Å"Hes just not that into you† were mainly middle aged working adults and â€Å"17 Again† were teenagers and their parents. Secondly, the most obvious dissimilarity of these movies is the story lines. â€Å"Hes just not that into you† is about a few characters struggling with ups and downs of their love lives in a complicated kind of way. At the centre of these multiple stories in one movie is Gigi, a young woman who repeatedly misunderstands the signs that men had given her about their level of interest in her. She got her advice from Alex, a bar owner who prides himself on perceiving the ins and outs of the dating scene. Gigis co-worker Janine found herself having difficulties in saving her marriage with her husband, Ben. On the other hand, Ben contemplated an affair with Anna, an attractive woman who was trying to make a career as a singer, from his wife. Another of Gigis friends at work, Beth, enjoyed a fruitful, healthy relationship with Neil, but soon storm clouds hover over them because he has no interest in getting married. In â€Å"17 Again†, it is about an unhappy working man who h ad transformed into a 17 years old teen in order to solve his family problems regarding his teen children and wife. At the age of 17, Mike ODonell was a successful person. Scarlett revealed she was pregnant before his basketball championship. After their marriage, Mike, a working man, complained the life he lost. One night, he saw a janitor standing on a bridge and jumped in after him. When he returned to his friends house he realized he was 17 again. He decided to take this opportunity to save his marriage and fix his relationship with his two teenage children. Furthermore, another dissimilarity that can be seen in both of these movies is the moral value. The moral value for the first movie is that we should not be a greedy person. In the movie, Ben who had an affair with Anna without his wife knowing eventually lost two of them in the end. For the second movie, the moral value emphasize on we should carry out our own responsibility regardless whether we are in a good or bad situation. In the movie, a young Mike ODonell carried out his responsibility by marrying his girlfriend who was pregnant with his child when they were both 17 years old. Here are the three main differences between â€Å"Hes just not that into you† and â€Å"17 Again†. As we can see, they break down to setting, story line and moral value that can be learnt through watching the movie. In a nutshell, both movies have their pros and cons despite they have the same genre.

The Legend of Narcissus :: Greek Mythology

In Greek mythology, â€Å"Narcissism" has its roots from the legend of Narcissus, a young man whom most deemed extremely handsome. A nymph named Echo developed an obsessive infatuation with Narcissus but he was unwilling to reciprocate such feelings to her or others. She finally gave up and isolated herself. Narcissus was then cursed to become socially isolated and reviled due to his complete self absorption by loving his own shadow from the pool (Wall & Loewenthal, 1998). Havelock Ellis (1898) first developed the concept of narcissism as a psychological construct referring to excessive masturbation by the people become their own sexual objects. Then this concept was adopted by Sigmund Freud (1914/1957) and other prominent psychoanalysts. Interestingly, the term â€Å"Narcissistic Personality Disorder† was first introduced by Heinz Kohut (1968), the founder of self psychology, and â€Å"Narcissistic Personality† by Otto Kernberg (1970) who is the major contributor of modern object relations theory. The DSM did not adopt the diagnosis of Narcissistic Personality Disorder until in the third revised edition published in 1980 (Siomopoulos, 1988). Thus, throughout the last century, the general term â€Å"narcissism† has been usually seen in the literature rather than Narcissistic Personality Disorder. From a recent study by Pincus et al. (2009), narcissism has been conceptualized as â€Å"one’s capacity to maintain a relatively positive self-image through a variety of self-, affect- and field-regulatory processes. It underlies individuals’ needs for validation and affirmation as well as the motivation to overtly and covertly seek out self-enhancement experiences from the social environment† (p.365). Normal and pathological narcissism. Researchers usually use the terms normal and pathological features of narcissism to describe adaptive and maladptive personality structure respectively, representing different psychological needs for self enhancement, validation, and regulatory mechanisms (e.g., Kernberg 1998, Kohut 1977, Morf 2006, Pincus 2005, Ronningstam 2009, Stone 1998). Some believe that normal and pathological narcissism are situated on a single continuum or dimension from healthy to disordered functioning (e.g., Cooper, 2005; Miller, Hoffman, Campbell & Pilkonis, 2008; Paulhus, 1998; Ronningstam, 2005b & Watson, 2005), while others contended that adaptive and pathological narcissism may be two distinct personality dimensions (e.g., Ansell 2006, Dickinson & Pincus, 2003; Pincus et al., 2009; Rathvon & Holmstrom, 1996; Wink, 1991). It could be found that the studies of social and personality psychology have more interest in the normal narcissism (e.g. Miller & Campbell, 20 08 ), whereas those researchers in clinical psychology focused more on the studies of pathological narcissism (e.

How Has Technology Changed Communication Practices Argumentative Essay

Introduction Information technology is one of the most dynamic factors in the world today. New developments in this field are made everyday. The world today may not imagine life without gadgets such as the mobile phone, computers, internet, motor vehicles, and marine equipment among others. All these items have been made available due to influences of technology. Information technology has had many influences in the world today. The most profound impacts that information technology has impacted very much is in the area of communication. This article focuses on the ways in which the telephone has changed communication in the last ten years. History of the telephone The history of the telephone dates back to the late 19th century. Alexander graham bell discovered the first telephone. Graham’s success with the telephone came from his attempt to improve the telegraph, one of the oldest modes of communication (Farley Tom 13) In June 1975, when Graham was experimenting with the harmonic telegraph, he realized that he could hear sound over the wire like a clock spring. From these simple concepts, the telephone has undergone a serious metamorphosis over the last many years with a lot of improvements. The most important developments in the telephone sector were the invention of the mobile phone by the Motorola Company in the 1970’s. This has made communication quite easy and effective. This has resulted from the fact that communication is of invaluable importance in modern times. A good example of the importance of communication could be a reference to the new Orleans war between the united states and the British. Their soldiers slaughtered one another just because information had not reached them on time that a peace treaty had already been signed between the United States and Britain ( http://www.mobil.greenline.ru/sony.html). Since the beginning of human history , information usually travelled just as fast   as a ship could sail,   a person   could walk or a horse could run, then came the telegraph and finally the invention of the telephone which latter led to the development of the mobile phone. The telephone is still widely used in the world today, although the mobile phone has rapidly overtaken it in terms of customer statistics ( http://uhavax.hartford.edu/JHOLMAN/History.html) The telecommunication industry has changed communication practices in a number of aspects as discussed below. Cost Before the discovery of telephones and cell phones, communication was very expensive. It was costly for one to transfer information from one place to another given the logistical limitations. Advancements in technology that have led to the lowered cost of the mobile telephone in the last ten years has drastically reduced the cost of communication in the world. This reduction in the cost of communication has resulted to an increase in the volume of information that can be transferred from one person to another. Speed of communication Communication is quite fast in the modern world as compared to the ancient times. Today, we can communicate to people outside our continent in real time using the telephone. Even more important is the connectivity of different continents through radio technology. This has made communication very fast and reliable. Efficiency and effectiveness in communication Efficiency refers to the achievement of goals with the good utilization of resources while effectiveness is geared towards the attainment of the objectives. The telephone industry has witnessed reduced call rates with increased competition in the last ten years. As a result of entry into the market by many players, the companies have been forced to utilize resources more efficiently and ensure quality in communication Communication is now more impersonal Unlike in the past where people could secretly communicate, the cell phone has made communication more impersonal in the last ten years. When you are talking to people over the phone, you probably do not have ant influence over who overhears your conversation. Even when text messaging is used, it can quickly be accessed by third parties. This means that communication is now more impersonal. Perhaps, the most important aspect of the telephone and its impact on communication is the features that have been incorporated into the cell phone. Unlike the traditional telephone that was used basically for verbal communication, the modern telephone has very advanced features that have had revolutionary influence on communication. These features are elaborated below. The last ten years have witnessed the inclusion of internet features in the mobile phone. Most of the phones today are 4G enabled especially the smart phones, meaning that it’s possible to browse at very fast speeds in the mobile phone. The inclusion of the internet in the mobile phone is a landmark development in the communication industry. With the mobile phone, one is able to send emails, MMS, chat, video conferencing, amongst other features. This has increased the ease and convenience of communication.   Today’s mobile phone is an advanced communication gadget with radio and Television reception capabilities. (http://www.cellphonecarriers.com/future-cell.html) The video chatting and conferencing are some of the advanced features of the mobile phone that allow real time communication across the globe with the help of the internet. This is a positive step in communication towards world integration in this era of globalization. Data communication features such as the blue tooth also allow the transfer of data from one cell phone to another, from a cell phone to a computer or vice versa. This has created efficiency in information sharing at a very cost effective way. Volume of communication A lot of communication is done today than any other time in the past. Statistics has it that in the United States, 91% of the population owns and/ or uses a mobile phone for communication. This is just an indicator of the volume of communication that is made possible by the use of mobile phones for the last ten years. This means that people are communicating more than before using more convenient means unlike the past where communication media was quite limited. Formality of communication practices In modern times, communication is more informal. The presence of social sites such as facebook and twitters that are accessible through the mobile phone have made communication more friendly and informal. Most people are using their mobile phones to access these social sites at the convenience of their homes. Despite all the positive impacts that the telephone has had on communication, there is a down side too.   The convenience, speed and connectivity of the modern cell phone has unfortunately resulted to a decrease in the quality of communication. People tend to take a lesser time to understand and think about what they intend to say. An accurately conveyed message may not be valuable as people take communication for granted. It’s easy to imagine that when a mistake is made, another phone call could easily fix the mistake. This creates a lot of inefficiency. The ability to call and fix a mistake does not make it acceptable. Conclusion Information technology has had far reaching impacts on communication. It can however be argued that the telecommunication industry has been the largest beneficiary of these technological advancements. This has led to the development of gadgets that have diverse capabilities. The cell phone has been modeled to make communication easier, convenient, efficient, fast and timely. It has however been used and abused by people due to the lack of standardized procedures and regulations concerning the use of these gadgets (http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/english/iyh/products/cellphones.htm.) .

Racism - 1051 Words

The first topic that is going to be addressed is stereotypes and dating. I am more familiar with this topic then the other two topics because I was the once who did the research for our group presentation about this. I came across numerous articles that were very eye opening to me. The first article I will talk about is called, Is Love Becoming Color Blind?. I really enjoyed reading through this article because it had personal examples from three different interracial couples. The first couple was Kristina Adamski and John Phillips, who were both in their early thirties. In the article it stated that being an interracial couple has been less of a challenge because the two communicate their feelings, and they have a large supportive†¦show more content†¦Least to say, black and white raters have higher ratings to members of their own race. Many racial problems are brought about because of racial stereotypes and prejudice. There was a women by the name of Yolanda Spivey and she was a victim of employment discrimination. Yolanda was unemployed for two years after working ten years in the insurance industry. Yolanda was struggling to find a job. She applied to a website that helps with job placing, and Yolanda was asked to take a diversity questionnaire. She was not having any luck with that site so she decided to go back and act like a white women, and the results were that the white women got more emails and calls for jobs then Yolanda did. If we could slowly start to improve our countries thoughts when it comes to race and employment, we could be more balanced and successful. In a color blind society we would have equal opportunity employment. The next topic to be discussed is stereotypes and media. Stereotypes in the media are very common. Media stereotypes of angry black women have become more noticeable in recent years, and this stereotype is effecting how people see race. Black women in the media are more than often portrayed as dark skin, loud ghetto acting women. There have been television shows that have tried to help with different races such as the Jeffersons and The Cosby Show. Those shows were still criticized for their use of stereotyped black characters.Show MoreRelatedRacism : Racism And Racism1544 Words   |  7 PagesTo understand whether or not racism is learnt, we first have to divulge into the nature of racism. Entrepreneurship is a topic that is heavily debated in regards to if it can be taught or not. The word Entrepreneurship originates from a French word that means to undertake. In the business sense, it is defined in the Merriam-Webster dictionary as one who organizes, manages, and assumes the risks of a business or enterprise. Since entrepreneurship is an appealing career path, people want to know if they can be taught it or if it is something they have intrinsically. The objective of this essay is to discuss that entrepreneurship is something that cannot be taught as some individuals believe, as one needs to have the drive to be an entrepreneur, real world experience is necessary to succeed as an entrepreneur and the economy is highly fluid and hard to keep up with. In order to even have a chance at being a successful entrepreneur, one must have the drive to succeed which appears to be unteachable. In order to master anything in life, an individual needs to be invested in what they are doing and persevere even when they feel like giving up. Human Anatomy and Physiology Assignment

Questions: 1) A 68-year-old male is admitted to the hospital for emphysema. He is hypoxic and his labs reveal low oxygen levels. His hematocrit is 65%. The physician has told him that he has a type of polycythemia in which he has an increased number of erythrocytes circulating in his bloodstream. The patient tells the nurse that he does not understand what that means. How would the nurse explain this in terms the patient would understand?2) A 52-year-old woman was diagnosed with leukemia and has been receiving chemotherapy as an outpatient. She tells the RN that she hasn't been feeling well. The patient's skin is warm to touch and she has a low-grade fever of 100.2 F. The neutrophil blood count is less than 1000/ul. The nurse is concerned about the possibility of infection because of the neutrapenia and low-grade fever. Explain why.3) A man of Mediterranean ancestry goes to his doctor with the following symptoms. He is very tired all of the time. He has difficulty catching his breath after even mild exercise. His doctor orders the following tests: complete blood count (CBC), hematocrit, differential WBC count. The tests show immature erythrocytes, fragile erythrocytes, and less than 2 million RBCs per cubic millimeter. What would be a tentative diagnosis and suggested treatment?4) Mariam, a blood type Rh' is married to an Rh F" husband. She was pregnant for the first time and their child has been determined to be Rh' The first pregnancy does not usually cause any problems, but the child was born blue and cyanotic.a) What is the Rh incompatibility called?b) Why is the baby cyanotic?c) Since this was Mariam's first pregnancy, how can you explain for the baby's problem?5) A 17-year-old black male is admitted to the hospital in sickle-cell crisis. Pain management is a top priority for clients in sickle-cell crisis. Explain why. Answers: 1. The nurse should tell the patient that as he has a reduced level of oxygen within the blood, his system has responded by generating more red blood cells and this caused polycythemia (Ä oga). Reduced oxygen level fuels the production of erythropoietin within the kidneys to produce more RBCs. 2. Low grade fever along with neutropenia represents a major concern for a patients survival. It is an important matter of concern because neutrophils function in phagocytosis (Wolach, Shpilberg and Lahav). This patient suffers from decreased capacity to fight against infection. 3. The tentative diagnosis would be Thalassemia and suggested treatment would be blood transfusion (Aydinok). 4. a) The Rh incompatibility is said to be a condition which develops when a pregnant female has Rh negative blood but her baby has Rh positive blood inside her womb. b) The baby is cyanotic may be because the blood inside the babys system is not bearing adequate oxygen. c) The mother needs to be informed about the babys complication, which means during pregnancy Mariam should get a RHO GAM shot and as her baby is Rh positive she should be administered with another shot. This helps the mother for further births and manages post padrum delivery complications. 5. Red blood cells with sickle shape live almost 10-12days where normal red blood cells can survive for almost 120days within the system. The destroyed sickle shaped red blood cells clump together and fasten to the blood vessel walls, which blocks the flow of the blood. This incident can cause pain and permanent harm to the organs like liver, kidneys, heart, brain, lungs, spleen and bones. Therefore, pain management is a top priority for clients with sickle cell crisis. References Aydinok,. 'Thalassemia'.Hematology(2012): n. pag. Web. Ä oga, Zoran. Total Quality Management Implementation

A Framework for TQM to Achieve Business Excellence Total Quality Management (TQM) is a set of quality and management tools employed in order to increase the performance of a business by reducing losses and increasing turnover. It aims at continually improving the quality of delivery of goods, services and all the functions of a business venture. This includes the interaction between all the sections of a firm as well as the individual sections themselves.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Total Quality Management Implementation specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Generally, the objective of TQM is to achieve an overall efficiency that is higher than the individual productivity from the components, such as design, planning, production, customer service approaches, and staff participation. Customer satisfaction and incessant improvement are the fundamental beliefs of the TQM strategy. TQM cannot function effectively wit hout the necessary changes being taken on the structure and functioning of the organization by its top management. Such changes include adherence to quality in planning, control and improvement, these can be achieved through numerous channels, for example, continuous improvement can be achieved by undertaking work-based training on a regular basis. Quality management is involved with the prevention of problems happening by putting in place attitudes and controls that may make such prevention a success. The core aspect of quality is to get it right the first time, and to meet the needs of the customer every time, by engaging everyone in the firm. TQM is therefore a conception of management that utilizes the resources and opportunities in an organization in the way possible through continuous improvement. Elements of TQM The implementation of a TQM is influenced by a range of indicators, both financial and non-financial. These affect the various aspects of TQM such as a reduction in d efect frequencies, increased client satisfaction, increased output, and reduced order cycle time. Fiscal indicators of a TQM include market share, profits, defect percentage, performance and stock turnover etc, while the non-fiscal indicators are customer satisfaction, innovation, skill improvement, reliability, and talent development, among others.Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? TQM elements are grouped into three main categories: Technologies (tools), Organization (systems), and People, these affect the financial and non-financial performance of the organization. Technologies and Tools Measures of technology and tools include benchmarking, data management, continuous impr ovement, problem solving, and continuous improvement, among others. Of these, TQM studies suggest that the most important is continuous improvement. Organization (systems) Organizational aspects of a TQM strategy include culture, organizational structure, communication, shared vision, and performance management. Again, TQM studies suggest that culture is the most important factor in achieving a TQM. People Factors relating to people include leadership, management responsibility, empowerment, training and education, and team learning. Team learning is the most vital TQM element among these. An efficient application of the TQM elements results into increased productivity of the organization indicated by financial performances such as increased stock turnover, increased market share and profits, and a reduction in defect rates and non-financial performances. Non-financial performances include customer satisfaction, delivery reliability, innovation, reduced order cycle time, and workflo w improvement as some of the non-financial performances.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Total Quality Management Implementation specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The mentioned elements of TQM have been successfully by Apple, the company has encouraged innovation and continues to a market leader in the smartphone and PC market. Apart from technology, Apple has a clear sense of the customer needs and continues to ensure that customer satisfaction is its core aim. This has enabled it to attain the position of the world’s second largest company despite being in danger going out of business a few years ago. Total quality management from theory to practice: a case study Manufacturing firms across the world are currently spending a substantial amount of time and money to improve the quality of their products, this has been brought by an increase in the expectation of consumers and has led to an increase in the q uality of goods supplied in domestic markets. A number of manufacturers have acted on these challenges by trying to employ some approaches of quality improvement procedure on a systems-wide basis. These approaches differ to some level but they share a fundamental set of features that represent the core of any quality improvement method. The process of ‘total quality’ commonly includes: Plainly defining the notion of quality and coming up with its measurement standards; Carrying out quality training for the whole organization; Coming up with meaningful parameters of quality for both the work processes and for each employee; Coming up with a system to take corrective measures whenever there are problems with product quality; Implementing efficient management practices to increase employee participation; and Establishing an organizational culture and reward scheme that enforces the principle that quality should be everyone’s core concern. When a firm implements a quality improvement process, it commonly does so with the help of an external party. The first part of this process involves quality training, explaining the standards and expectations, establishing parameters for quality improvement, and establishing procedures to do away with threats to quality after their identification. The second part is the implementation phase since the organization starts the use of training, standards, taking corrective measures and management practices to continuing daily processes. To achieve success in a quality improvement process, an organization needs to institutionalize the process into the firm’s practice, many organizations struggle or fail to realize their goals in this area, hence failure in quality improvement.Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More In order to improve a firm’s products, it must require, motivate, and effect change in all of its sectors. For management to start a TQM, the procedure is comparatively straightforward. The first step is for the organization to underline the reason for quality improvement; the second stage is to come up with a strategy for the quality improvement. Thirdly-, management needs to employ a quality improvement process that is in tow with the firm’s needs. The quality improvement process can be developed internally or contracted from external sources and in order to ensure that the plan is successful, the management must note the following Leadership must lead by example; The more rapid and complicated the changes are, the greater the help needed; Managers must give continuous feedback to their seniors; Messages given to staff must be devoid of any ambiguities; The management and workers must show openness when handling problems; and Meetings and paperwork must be minimized so that management has ample time to exhibit quality conduct to their workforce. Failure to implement sound TQM policies can lead to a decline in performance by an organization, this has been proved by a number of companies. For example, Enron, a US energy company that was a market leader and was named ‘America’s Most Innovative Company’ for six years and with revenues of more than $100 billion in 2001, however, the company wound up operations in 2006 as a result of accounting frauds that were planned and executed by its managers, a fraud that became to be known as the Enron scandal. Critical implementation issues in total quality management The main idea of the article under consideration is whether the Total Quality Management (TQM) is an opportunity to improve business or it is a strategy which provides only theoretical knowledge and may never be use in practice. TQM key principles may be failing only in case when the company managers failed to apply those i n complex or did not understand the main idea of those. The main points which each company should remember if it wants to apply TQM principles are the lessons. In order to achieve the results promised by the proponents of the TQM approach, it is important to have knowledge of the key TQM principles, these are: efficient top management and commitment, client satisfaction, staff participation and motivation, continuous improvement, collaboration with suppliers, and recognition of the importance of quality in realizing TQM goals. For a successful implementation of TQM, the organization needs to have the following lessons: It is important that organizations clearly understand the meaning and implications of TQM before implementing it. Before implementing a TQM, the management needs to identify its targets and the mode of implementation; Establish a culture that can sustain and support the implementation of a TQM. Many firms succeed in committing to total quality by employing the princi ples mentioned earlier, but fail in cultivating a culture that promotes quality improvement; TQM implementation should be matched with the firm’s strategic priorities, competitiveness, and objectives; Take note of the most important things- time and effort. Management should target achievable, practical, and real goals instead of trying to cover many elements at a time; TQM implementation should be aligned to the needs of the individual organizations and these are normally unique to each organization; Take a holistic approach as TQM is a complex process that requires an effective strategy to succeed. TQM is so wide and incorporates many disciplines and an approach that encourages interaction between these disciplines must be adopted; Remember that the term ‘Total Quality Management’ communicates the concept of quality improvement activities with stress on the word ‘total’ and a wide definition of ‘quality’; There is need to understand th at TQM is not a solution for all aspects of quality, the organization must understand the extent to which this strategy will improve quality and improve productivity. The TQM strategy is a good advisor in the company management. A manager should just correctly understand TQM principles and properly apply those. It is also important to remember that the principles should be integratable. Those who fail to understand the main principles of the TQM framework and the lessons are unable to use this strategy. Even if they try, they are not sure to succeed with it. There are a lot of examples when a company managed to succeed with the help of the TQM and its principles. For example, the Coca Cola Company strongly commits leadership, focuses on customers, involves and empowers employees, provides continuous improvements in different spheres, increases and supports partnerships, and considers quality as a strategic point in planning business. With the help of the TQM use the company is a le ader in the beverage drinks production all over the world. Achieving the organizational change necessary for successful TQM Implementation of a TQM is one of the most challenging tasks in an organization. It is not rare to find organizations failing in their attempts to improve the quality of goods and services, these failed companies are being pushed out of the market. Companies are using quality to gain a competitive advantage over the others. Often, the reason for the failure of implementation of TQM is in the fact that their approach bears little similarity to the conventions. An example of such cause of failure is in the development of standards, standards are usually control-oriented methods controlled by the top-level management with little involvement of the employees. The management uses these standards to control their staff. Training changes to a corrective activity whenever the set standards are not followed. Conceptual weakness is one of the main mistakes provided by th e companies which want to apply TQM principles. The failure to understand properly control-oriented methods, training and motivation results in bad consequences for the company implementation. Another type for failure is s design failure, this occurs when the TQM concept is convincing but the plan and/or implementation is not carried out in the right manner. When TQM systems are not designed with the organizational needs in mind, chances of failure are higher. Design failures are an earlier warning that the implementation will fail too. The third form of failure is an implementation failure. This occurs when the concept and design are convincing, but the change agent and/or the top-level management do not comprehend the intricacy of organizational change and innovation required. Similarly, it may be caused by the failure to allocate funds for supporting the realization of the TQM strategy. The main failures mentioned above should be considered by any company which desires to apply T QM principles in practice. Before considering TQM principles the managers of the company should check the most commonly occurred mistakes. It is obvious that it is impossible to run a successful business without standards and control. Furthermore, motivation should be properly stated. Employees should be encouraged to do something new. The communication should not be organized from top to bottom only. One of the most frequently occurred failures connected with the TQM applying is an implementation failure. The main reason is when conceptual and design elements are correct, but the organizational and cultural change is not understood in a proper way. One of the best examples of failure to understand the implantation of the TQM principles and the organizational change may be considered via the Boeing Company. It failed to provide the organizational change properly which made it possible for the Airbus Company come to the fore. This company lost its market share in 2006 because the org anizational and cultural changes were not properly considered and the company had to review its positions to return to the previous positions. The TQM Approach of Asset Management This approach recognizes that apart buildings, land, machines or funds in the bank, an organization’s assets include its workforce, customers, community, corporate culture, etc. A sound management of these assets will increase the productivity. An example is Delta Airline’s that supports its employees to give satisfactory services to customers and this has led to an excellent financial record.
